The History of the Fracino British Espresso Machine

Fracino is a third-generation family business and the UK’s only manufacturer of espresso and cappuccino machines. Its story spans over 50 years of craftsmanship, innovation, and growth.

1960s – The Beginning
In 1962, machine tool designer Frank Maxwell – later dubbed ‘the godfather of espresso’ – dismantled a second-hand coffee machine on a family holiday in Italy. Inspired, he began importing machines to the UK, launching the business from a garden shed a year later.

1990s – The Fracino Brand is Born
Operating under the Fracino name since 1990, the company grew from its Birmingham base into a respected global brand, offering over 60 models to suit all budgets and styles.

2000s – Recognition & Expansion
Fracino became one of the UK’s fastest-growing urban manufacturers, achieving ISO 9001 and winning major industry awards for innovation.

In 2011, the then Prime Minister David Cameron praised Fracino, saying:

"It’s not just the film industry where Britain is excelling – Fracino in Birmingham is selling coffee-makers to Italy."

Fracino expanded into a custom-built 50,000 sq ft HQ to meet demand.

2010s – Celebrating 50 Years
In a landmark year, Fracino supplied 11 Piccino machines to the G8 Summit, proudly representing British manufacturing in world leaders’ lodges. Even No. 10 Downing Street has a Fracino machine.

That same year, Fracino was named alongside Mini and Jaguar Land Rover as one of "5 Super-Brit brands taking over the world."
